Although we live in the digital age, handwriting is still essential.
In this day and age, everything is digital from our newspapers to our books to even notes for our classes. With computers plentiful and more affordable than ever before, why would you ever need to actually handwrite anything? The fact is that, although its place in the world has become diminished over the past few years, handwriting is still incredibly important, and if it does ever finally become a distant part of history, we will be missing out on the many benefits that it brings. Here are just a couple of the many reasons why handwriting is still important in the digital age:
#1. Academic Performance
Did you know that handwriting can help your kids be more successful in school? In a study of 1,000 students from preschool to second grade that was published in the Journal of Early Childhood Education and Development, it was found students who that were accomplished in the fine motor skills learned from handwriting practice were more likely to succeed in both math and reading.
A study that was published in Psychological Science found that students who took notes by hand were more engaged in cognitive processes than students who took notes on a laptop. It may take more time to actually handwrite something as opposed to typing it, but it’s worth the effort because it helps you remember it more effectively!
