Direct mail marketing is expensive. Between the printing and the labor, it’s sometimes the postage that can really hold you back from going all out. Well, we’ve got good news for you. The month of April has shown to have drastically more affordable postage rates than other months of the year. If you’re not convinced that this is a big deal, then this must be your first go-round with direct marketing. Postage is often one of the most expensive, if not the most, components to direct mail marketing, so any change in price in this regards is a pretty big deal.

On February 25, the USPS filed a notice that said that they would reduce the postage rates. In this filing the USPS stated that this change

“Intends to remove the exigent surcharge on Sunday, April 10, absent action by Congress or the courts to make the existing exigent surcharge for Market Dominant Products and Services part of the rate base or to otherwise extend it.”

So what does this mean? This means that USPS would lower the cost of overall postage, leaving it in a worse financial state than it currently is. This drop in postal prices includes stamps like the Forever Stamp that don’t have an expiration date. The exigent charge that these stamps have been charging surmounts in over 4.6 billion dollars worth of revenue to the United States Postal Services.

For this exact reason, April is a great time for businesses to start pushing their direct mail marketing campaigns. Now that prices will be going down, these are the prices that you can expect to be charged taken directly from the USPS website.

CURRENT REDUCTION
Letters 49 cents 47 cents
Letters Additional Ounces 22 cents 21 cents
International Letters $1.20 $1.15
Postcards 35 cents 34 cents

This being said, the drop in price will open more opportunities for you and your business to incorporate direct mail marketing into the overall marketing campaign. Whether you’ve never used the direct mail campaign or you’ve been holding off because of the cost, there is no longer an excuse as to why you can’t make it happen. It may not seem as though the drop in price is a lot, but it adds up, and in turn adds up to more customers being exposed to your business and what it has to offer.

Worcester Envelope is excited to see how this change will affect the direct mail marketing world as we know it. While so many people view it as a form of marketing that is quickly dying, there are plenty of reasons, such as price, that go into why people don’t use it within their foundation marketing plan.
