In fact, just keeping a simple journal of everything you’re thankful for can increase your sense of well-being in the long-term by upwards of 10 percent. Believe it or not, the impact of being thankful on your well-being is comparable to what doubling your income would be. You don’t necessarily have to make more money to be happier; you just have to be able to recognize everything you already have.

Do you find yourself staring at the ceiling while you run through all of your worries in your head when you try to fall asleep at night? Try jotting down what you are thankful for instead! Nothing ruins a good night’s sleep like worrying, but the good news is that, when you are more grateful, it can actually help you to sleep better! One study that was published in the journal, Applied Psychology: Health and Well-being, found that people who spent just 15 minutes writing down what they were thankful for stayed asleep longer and fell asleep faster than those who did not.
#3. It can help to improve your friendships.
Maintaining friendships when you’re young is fairly easy, but when you get older and life catches up with you, it’s not always easy to find time to spend with those you love or catch up with your friends. But when you take the time to be grateful, it can help you become a better friend to those around you. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that gratitude increases behaviors that are pro-social, such as lending emotional support to a friend or helping someone out.
#4. It could help to improve your immune system.
Could taking the time to give thanks actually help you avoid getting sick? As we mentioned earlier, people who are grateful tend to be more optimistic, and that optimism is linked to a stronger immune system. A study conducted by the University of Utah found that students who were more optimistic had more blood cells that boost the immune system than those who had a more pessimistic attitude.
#5. It improves self-esteem.
